Our first Elder to bloom before the leaves appear.

Territory:

Everywhere until at least the Taiga.

Habitat:

Forest, woodland and shrubland, prefer rocky places.

Flowering:

In bloom late April, early May, fruit in early summer.

Similar:

Common elderberry (Sambucus canadensis) which has parabolic inflorescences, umbrella-shaped rather than conical for the Red elderberry, fruits of the Common elderberry are darker, almost black.
What distinguishes them most is the time of flowering in early spring for the Red elderberry, in summer for the Common elderberry.
In western North America, so not in Quebec, there are two other varieties of red elderberry, a greater one almost a tree, and another with black fruit.
Our species is more accurately named: Sambucus racemosa subsp. pubens var. pubens.
