As the Trout lily, the Carolina spring beauty is a spring ephemeral, once the leaves of the trees that surround her fully open the plant disappears from the surface.

Two very different habitats, firstly in the forest especially in maple but through other species too, and also in transalpine plains.
Flowering:
In bloom in late April early May.
Similar:
The Eastern spring beauty (Claytonia virginica), with narrow, lanceolate leaves.
Eastern spring beauty is less common and present in southern Quebec only.
