A small spring beauty of our rich woods.
The Carolina spring beauty appears from the first warm days of April.
It can form large mats in the woods with its particular method of seed dispersal: as the flower turns into fruit the peduncle is inclined towards the ground, once the capsule (fruit) formed the peduncle straightens quickly, the capsule explodes throwing the seeds at a good distance, up to 60cm, which is, for the size of the flower, an Olympic record!
Often parasitized by a tiny fungus : Puccinia claytoniata.
The Carolina spring beauty reproduces only by seed, as germination rate is low it spreads very slowly, do not pick.
